Todd Snyder x The Met Van Gogh Irises Sweatshirt

This oversized hoodie has a relaxed, easy fit through the shoulder and body. It’s made from a comfortable cotton terry and features a sturdy, double-layered hood and kangaroo-style hand pocket. It’s digitally printed with an adaptation of Vincent van Gogh’s (Dutch, 1853–1890)Irises (1890) in exceptional detail. Van Gogh painted this particular piece shortly before checking himself out of the asylum at Saint-Rémy; he sought a “harmonious and soft” effect by placing the “violet” flowers against a “pink background,” which have since faded owing to his use of fugitive red pigments. Here, Todd took a new perspective on this iconic image by turning it into a bold, repeating pattern that plays off of the flowers’ organic forms.

As part of its mission tocollect, study, conserve, and present significant works of art across time and cultures in order to connect all people to creativity, knowledge, ideas, and one another, The Metropolitan Museum of Art invited Toddto design a wearable, art-inspired collection. “The colors and brushstrokes of Van Gogh, Degas, and Manet feel incredibly modern, incredibly relevant,” says Todd of the pieces he chose to adapt for this unique collaboration.
