This classic Penny Loafer is made in Italy at a factory that’s been making shoes since the 1930s. It’s crafted from Italian calf suede, and lined in soft leather for an easier break-in period. The rubber sole provides good traction, and more versatility during inclement weather; a stacked wood heel and topstitching throughout adds timeless style. The origin of the Penny Loafer can be traced back to 1934, when G.H. Bass designed the Weejun: a loafer with a strip of leather stitched across the saddle of the shoe, featuring a shaped cutout. These would become the shoe of choice for young men and students in the 1950s; they would keep a dime in the cut-out, which eventually gave the shoes their colloquial name, “Penny Loafer.”

Todd’s Spring/Summer 26 runway collection balances structured tailoring and soft sensuality, inspired by the faded glamour of Havana in the 50s and the swagger of a guy stepping off a plane in Miami in the 80s.

The sweaters in La Buena Vida are all inspired by mid-century styles, layering in different old-school details: an extra tab closure at the hem, tapered waists, extended collars, vintage-inspired patterns, and more.

Review: Todd Snyder Italian Suede Penny Loafer

I first noticed these shoes in a photo of George Clooney stepping onto his boat on Lake Como. They immediately caught my eye—effortless style, timeless design, and just plain cool. That image stayed with me, and when I discovered Todd Snyder offered something very similar, I decided to take the plunge.

I’ve never owned a pair of $800 shoes before, but now I see exactly why they command that price. The construction is nothing short of phenomenal. The suede is soft and supple, and the interior lining makes them comfortable from the very first wear—no break-in period required. The leather soles are a welcome touch of craftsmanship in a market where so many shoes default to rubber or crepe. They’re elegant, classic, and built the way shoes should be built.

All in all, I’m completely sold. These loafers live up to the image that first inspired me, and they’ve set the bar for what I’ll expect in footwear going forward. Once my credit card has had a chance to recover, I plan on adding either the lace-up boots or the Chelsea boots to my collection.
