Fantastic Overall, Somehwat Odd FIt

I really love the fabric and overall look of these shorts, but the fit to me seems odd.

I initially ordered these shorts in size S. I have a 30" waist with more athletic glutes/thighs and was absolutely swimming in them. The elastic waist of the size S would have easily accommodated a 34" waist. I exchanged for an XS which fits in the waist, although still somewhat loose (remedied by the the internal drawstrings), but is borderline too tight in the thighs. I'm keeping them, but I'd appreciate another inch at the leg opening without going super wide in line with recent rend.
