IN THE PINK WITH

JUSTIN VERNON

Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon and Todd have long been fans of each other’s work. So to celebrate the release of Justin’s new album, SABLE, fABLE, they got together to compare notes on their creative processes and preview some fresh tracks during a party at our Madison Square flagship in New York. They also unveiled a collaboration — a limited-edition cashmere hoodie and watch cap, in a color story inspired by the cover art of Justin’s new album. "Salmon has been my favorite color since I was a kid, and I had a sweatshirt from Schoolkids' Records that I loved," says Justin.

Watch Todd and Justin compare notes on how they create.

I’ve been a fan since Justin’s first record. So when he reached out, and we started hanging out, it meant a lot that he was this really down-home person who’s not ego-driven but art-driven.

Todd

Todd’s from Iowa. I’m from western Wisconsin, and there’s a certain ethic that we share. I didn’t expect to have this big career like a kid growing up in L.A. might. It was just like 'What are we doing Friday night?' You learn to create something out of nothing.

MEET YOUR MAKER: JUSTIN VERNON

Vernon is best known as the founder of Bon Iver, a play on the French phrase bon hiver, meaning “good winter.” He gained widespread popularity as a singer-songwriter with his debut album For Emma, Forever Ago (2007), which he famously recorded in a cabin in Northwestern Wisconsin. Like Todd, he’s a frequent and diverse collaborator, having worked with Taylor Swift, Kanye West, Swamp Dogg, Charli xcx and Aaron Dessner of The National (another Todd favorite). His new album is composed of two different song cycles: SABLE, with songs of vulnerability, and fABLE, with lightness and love.
