B-SHARP... B-FLAT... BE SUITABLE

starring
THE CAMERON CAMPBELL QUARTET

The styles of jazz — Bebop, Bossa Nova and the Cool School to name a few — could easily double as modes of dressing. So who better than New York jazzmen to put our new tailoring through its paces? The Cameron Campbell Quartet may be a young band, but they have a deep appreciation for the classics, both musically and sartorially. Conway Campbell, the group’s bassist, is heavily influenced by Paul Chambers (who played with Miles Davis and John Coltrane). Their style cues are equally proper. As bandleader, Cameron Campbell notes, “The music and the venue demand a certain amount of respect. If we were playing Birdland or the [Village] Vanguard, I’d want the band to have a suit-and-tie vibe. Chic.”

Growing up in Worcester, Massachusetts, Cameron and his two siblings started taking piano lessons when they were little. “By sixth grade, piano was something I thought I could do professionally. My mom would take my brother Conway and I around to the local nursing home for gigs,” he says. His taste, which now runs from jazz to Bad Brains, was always eclectic: “When I was growing up, I loved Little Richard, Chuck Berry and lots of Eighties music…Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald. It’s true.”

Cameron’s brother Conway’s love of the bass came from family car trips with their dad, a professor at Assumption College. “He’s from Jamaica. And in the car, he was always playing ska or reggae really loud, and I could feel the bass,” says Conway. When Cameron arrived at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City, he met Emmanuel Michael (guitar) originally from South Dakota and Kabelo Mokhatla (drums), who came to the US from South Africa on a Hugh Masekela Heritage Scholarship. Conway eventually joined the trio, too, when he arrived at MSM to study for his master's. And once our jam session-meets-photoshoot got underway, it became clear that whatever the band member’s background, build or jam, everyone can look great in our tailoring.
