This elegant timepiece is an example of Patek quality and elegance at its finest — a solid 18-carat yellow gold Patek Philippe Ellipse model, on a Patek alligator strap, with a Patek 18k buckle. The clean, soft oval design is said to have been inspired by the “golden ratio” of ancient Greek mathematicians — in the face of the looming quartz crisis, Patek saw its Ellipse collection, introduced in 1968, as works of art more than timepieces. In fact, advertisements at the time marketed the Ellipse as a “non-watch,” suggesting that “people who merely need to know the time of day will choose a watch, not a Patek Philippe.” This particular example has a striking, metallic navy blue dial in perfect original condition. The “Patek” name and “Swiss” are printed at the foot of the dial in a gold serif font. The non-luminous hands have a minimalist gold pencil design, and the watch is powered by a Patek Philippe quartz caliber.
